IRC Takeover Initial Findings

[Updated 10/3/19 8:54 PM PST]

Over the past week, I've spent some time surveying the websites of the top IRC networks gathering information about their linking policies.  Many are in a state of disrepair and haven't been updated for some time, as evidenced by the latest "news" items on their front pages being several years old.  From their linking application forms (or lack thereof) many of the top networks look averse to linking new servers.  For example, see the IRCNet documents:

Please be aware, that usually administrators never link servers from people, who apply for a link. If there is really need for a server, the administrators of that TLD will look around which organization would be most appropriate, and then ask them, if they would like to support an IRCnet server.

That said, some appear to be reasonable and they are at the top of the list.  In terms of hardware, my server far exceeds the recommended specifications (which all appear to have been written long ago).  My hosting provider has approved my request to run an IRC server, and will contact me if my bandwidth usage spikes significantly.  For whatever reason they felt it necessary to inform me that:

In addition please take note that we cooperate with government agencies to
deliver secure web services for all our customers and the Internet at large.

Below is a partially researched list of the 100 top IRC networks according to netsplit.de.  Details about more networks will be added as time allows.  Having found a few apparently amenable networks I will next focus on contacting them.

Due to the wysiwyg editor1 in my blog not being able to handle cutting and pasting list items, instead of reordering, for now I've bolded networks of initial interest and added a users per server metric in parentheses next to each researched network name. I intend to add a notes row to each item, but did not have time as of publishing to review already researched networks to add relevant notes.

Based on my readings of the server applications and the user/server ratios, I have selected the following networks for my initial linking efforts in the following order:

  • OFTC
  • Undernet
  • EsperNet
  • DALnet

    1. Put in the whole list anyway, with "pending" at the bits that are not yet done/take more time. It still helps to see it.
    2. Related to 1 above for instance, I don't see the real problem with "all content is in Italian/Turkish/Anything"; so what, can speak Italian/Turkish or not, they might speak some English or not, not a reason to discard without even *attempting* contact.
    3. Similarly, the "Code of Conduct" conceit is their problem ultimately. Yes, they will therefore be bottom of the list for this stupidity but otherwise they can have it and we don't care, they are welcome to do whatever they want with it.
    4. When you say "should give a rough idea of how much I'll be able to accomplish" the clear *promise* you make there is that you'll have at the end of the article the "based on the above, it's likely I'll need x time to finish the list" or similar.

You’re shit at Google, mate. Maybe try fucking googling it.

Re wysiwg editor - use the html one, ofc! A html list is simply bla so you *can* move those around as you want with copy/paste, ofc you can!

That gov-bla is probably their way of saying that they own "your" server and therefore you should expect that they pass on *all* your data there to anybody asking for it.

What's the more exact status re running ircd?

It is absolutely wrong to interact with the subhumans to any extent and in any way based on any kind of consideration given to what their pre-linguistic vomit / ebullution might supposedly be taken as or interpreted to if the speaker were in fact a republican.

It makes exactly zero difference what they say they want, what they think they said they want, what they thought they wanted etcetera etcetera. In all times and places interaction with the subhuman mass starts with an order, not with an inquiry. "Give me your bra", not "What kinds of things do you like to do". The quality of their obedience is then judged, by republican criteria only, and dictates the manner in which the relationship is continued. Specifically : whether they have to go to the ovens, or not just yet, or perhaps may even elevate their sad bios existence into actual zoon humanity.

So nevermind all that boihood fretting in a corner. Contact them, tell them what is what, let them make some kind of answer and publicize that.

And, to be perfectly clear as to "what is what" : we, the most serene republic, are offering them hardware, in principle as much as they need but starting with one server ; and they will recognize us as a first class member exactly, meaning we are part of all their boards / decision making processes / etcetera ; and that in no case anyone involved in any way has any priviledge either qualitatively or quantitatively in excess of what is extended us, starting with one representative we'll nominate. Ie, ~federation~, not some kind of "gimme bux for free cuz i'm speshul, daddy!" that'll in due time necessarily end with more bob beck burnings. The becks ain't worth the kindle, if it's not self-obvious by now.

Exactly how and in what order or by what timing etcetera you choose to present the foregoing to make it stick is entirely your business (and entirely the job descriptiobn of a diplomatic agent), but it is what it is, and that precisely it fucking stays.

    > my server far exceeds the recommended specifications

It doesn't have to be your own server unless for some reason you specifically wish to. We have an isp which can front this for you just as well, not like they don't have rack space or machinery or anything.

    > Due to the wysiwyg editor1 in my blog not being able to handle cutting and pasting list items,

I confess this made no sense. Wut ?!

You've seen list items on trilema neh ?

    This is clear to me.

I understand this. TMSR is not beholden to these networks. They are dying for their own sins, and if they properly understood the situation they would be on their knees begging the republic to join.

I would prefer to use Pizarro if resources are available.

I explained my problem more clearly here: http://logs.ossasepia.com/log/ossasepia/2019-10-04#1004607
